Monsanto – Time for regulation of Monsanto GMO crops and chemicals
What if someone told you that the food you were eating was covered in a substance that kills human cells, even if the chemical has been diluted below levels used in farming? This test even included three types of cells; umbilical, embryonic, and placental. (National Center For Biotechnology Information) According to NCBI, after just 24 hours all of the test results showed that the cells were totally dead, and this is what we are expected to eat. Most people would probably refrain from putting that food into their bodies, but somehow this has become the standard for a lot of food in the US thanks to companies like Monsanto.
The substance tested is in Roundup, also called Glyphosate, and it is in common use in the United States. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that will kill most plants. It actually stops plants from making proteins that are essential for plant growth.
The EPA has just recently allowed double the amount of this chemical in a new regulation which will change from 20 parts per million to 40 parts per million on oilseed crops. (I.E. flax, canola, soybean oil) This new amount will cause even more adverse health effects to humans despite the data that Monsanto gave to the EPA for this increase. (Natural News) This is why we shouldn’t allow companies to test their own products without checking them with a secondary agency that is supposed to be looking for health risks.
There are studies that show Glyphosate is linked to negative effects in humans which occur slowly over time. While the industry claims that it is minimally toxic to humans, it has been shown that diets consisting of sugar, corn, soy, and wheat are at risk of serious health issues. “Glyphosate’s inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes is an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals. CYP enzymes play crucial roles in biology, one of which is to detoxify xenobiotics.” — (MDPI)
The continued use of this chemical on our food results in inflammation which damages cellular systems in our bodies; this causes gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Glyphosate is referred to as a textbook example of exogenous semiotic entropy. (disruption of homeostasis by environmental toxins) Biosemiotic Entropy
If the studies show that this chemical is so harmful to humans over long periods of time, then why would the EPA approve the doubling of its use? Glyphosate could potentially be the cause for a lot of the adverse health effects which have seemed to increase a great deal in the last few decades. How many of us know someone who is on an antidepressant or anxiety medication? How many people in this country have diabetes, heart disease, or cancer? Could a simple change of diet actually cure these feelings of depression, or even diabetes? This chemical raises a lot of questions and we put it into our mouths three times a day in some cases.
Europeans seem to have figured out that GMO crops have such negative effects on the human body that they have forced Monsanto to cease all efforts to grow in Europe. (GRIST.Org) If they think it is harmful in Europe, why would it be any safer to eat GMO crops in America? Keep in mind that Monsanto is a huge corporation with a lot of resources in this country and it even has its own protection act. Section 735 of H.R. 933: Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013
“In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act.”
It seems as if the food industry is willing to provide a product to make money with total disregard for human life and the worst part is that they can legally do it. There have been movements against Monsanto, such as Occupy Monsanto, which attempt to inform the public of the dangers of this company and the food it is providing to our nation.
The agency that is supposed to regulate these types of companies, the EPA, seems to have done nothing at all as far as protecting either the environment or humans. Companies like Monsanto need to be challenged and questions need to be asked regarding responsibility and accountability. How can it be legal for a company to produce food that kills people and causes such serious health issues after they eat it? Even worse, why is our government allowing such companies to continue to harm us with their product?
